Braeden Prete (2T2), a second-year periodontics resident, discusses his adjustment from his hometown of Thunder Bay to Toronto over six years ago, and encourages dentists to explore opportunities in Northern Ontario.
The GreenShield Clinic is changing lives as the only cost-free dental clinic in Canada offering comprehensive care. It was established in 2021 by a $6.15-million donation from GreenShield, with a mandate to serve 525 patients.
This summer, the Faculty of Dentistry welcomed 110 enthusiastic high school students through the University of Toronto’s Summer Mentorship Program. The SMP is an exceptional initiative that offers a transformative experience for high school student of Indigenous or African ancestry in Grades 10 to 12.
We’re delighted to welcome the Class of 2T7 to the Faculty this September. Karina Carneiro, Massieh Moayedi, and Anil Kishen from the Faculty of Dentistry were among the 36 U of T researchers awarded Canada Research Chairs. Learn more the announcement below and continue reading the other stories in this section for details about their research.
Professor Anil Kishen is receiving Canada Research Chair Tier 1 Funding for his work in oral health nanomedicine. Combining his unique background in clinical science and biomedical engineering, Dr. Kishen’s lab will be using multifunctional bioactive nanoparticles to look at wound healing and cellular crosstalk mechanisms.
Assistant professor Karina Carneiro’s lab has made significant strides in the field of bone regeneration using DNA hydrogels. Their recent research, focusing on the development of DNA hydrogels as biomaterial for bone repair, has been published in the esteemed journal PNAS.
The therapeutics that we have now are just 30 per cent effective at managing chronic pain. Professor Massieh Moayedi wants to know more about a possible root cause of pain, to one day improve patient outcomes.

U of T Centre for the Study of Pain: Translational Seminar Series with Dr. Bushnell
Dr. Bushnell joined the University of Toronto Centre for the Study of Pain's (UTCSP) Translational Seminar Series at Hart House at UofT on August 31st , 2023, where she gave her hybrid talk: Beyond Opioids: engaging endogenous pain modulation in the brain. This talk was co-presented by UTCSP, the Collaborative Program in Neuroscience (CPIN), the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP), and the Canadian Pain Society (CPS).
Alumni Lecture Series: Building the Future of Good Oral Health
On September 28, 2023 at 7:00 p.m. EST, you are invited to join us online for Category 2 CDE Accredited Lecture hosted by Dr. Glogauer in partnership with U of T’s Faculty of Dentistry. CDE Course: Basic and Advanced Skills in Oral Surgery
This in-depth hands-on course will re-familiarize dentists in basic surgical skills as well as introduce advanced oral surgery techniques. These include advanced suturing, bone removal, tooth sectioning, biopsy technique with soft tissue manipulation for flap creation, drain placement, and a review of bone grafting, membrane application, and implant placement.
CDE Course: Continuing Education Implant Residency for Practicing Dentists 2024
Our comprehensive implant Residency for Practicing Dentists course is designed for general dentists who want to begin performing dental implant treatment. This course meets the initial educational requirements of surgical and prosthetic implant dentistry as set out by the RCDSO (Educational Requirements & Professional Responsibilities for Implant Dentistry).
