Warm Greetings! I am delighted to share our first quarterly newsletter of 2024 and hope that you enjoy reading about the fantastic stories and events that are taking place in our community.

When Helen Hoang came to the Faculty of Dentistry, she didn’t know she’d be gaining more than a degree. Hoang met her future husband Sean Chung during her time at U of T. This Valentine’s Day, the couple shared how their community at the Faculty brought them together.
To increase the number of dentists with the skills to serve the underserved population of special needs dentistry patients at Sinai hospital, the team at Mount Sinai Hospital and the Faculty of Dentistry hope to launch a fellowship unlike any other in the country.
A new project as part of the Practice Administration course is giving DDS4 students a mentorship experience that offers a close look at how dentistry works on the ground.

For DDS4 student Ola El Maki, giving 100 per cent at school doesn’t come at the cost of sacrificing her commitment to volunteerism. El Maki shares her dedication and highlights the achievement of the Black community, particularly in the dental field, and acknowledges the importance of Black representation.
The Faculty of Dentistry played an instrumental role in the recent inclusion of noma on the World Health Organization’s official list of neglected tropical diseases. Click the link below to learn how this decision will have an enormous impact on future global efforts to control the disease.
Research Day 2024 took place on February 13th at the Faculty of Dentistry. Students participated in the day through the poster competition and oral presentations. Mercedes Ing was named the winner of the Faculty’s final round of the 3-Minutes Thesis Competition and will move on to the larger, university-wide competition.
The Faculty of Dentistry is continuing to upgrade its facilities in order to provide the best in student learning and patient care. The latest renovation of the building’s simulation lab is an example of a space that will enhance both the student and patient experience.
Reaching his final years in his DDS degree, Janev reflects on his time as a student-athlete and his immense appreciation for his community both on the tennis court, and at the Faculty of Dentistry.
On January 8, the 2024 IDAPP class proudly wore their white coats and took their oath of commitment at the White Coat Ceremony. Incoming student Aneri Patel is joining her husband, Dharm Patel, who entered the IDAPP program last year.

In celebration of Black History Month 2024, the Dentistry Library has put together a small virtual exhibit highlighting Black women who have worked in dentistry.
The iconic Dentantics show is returning for its 101st event on March 1st, 2024 at Isabel Bader Theatre. Doors open at 7pm, show begins at 7:30pm, with the annual after-party at The Madison Ave Pub. All proceeds are donated to the Access to Care Fund.

The CAPD will be hosting a member reception at the AAPD meeting in Toronto. This year U of T will have a table at the reception and I would like to invite U of T Pediatric dentistry alumni to stop in and visit. Exclusively for graduates of 1974 or earlier, our Dentistry Alumni Brunch is a nostalgic reunion where classmates reconnect, memories are shared, and the school is revisited. This course will provide the general practitioner with the confidence to be able to select when primary teeth require pulp therapy and/or a stainless-steel crown and the skills to be able to provide this service.
This lecture and hands-on course will identify the cornerstones of endodontics that cannot be changed. It will provide alumni with the knowledge of optimal evidence-based protocols.
